Documenting my pocket of Los Angeles
When World Cup fans came to Los Angeles in 1994, they were greeted with five new murals painted to honor this historic moment. For the first time, the US was hosting the FIFA World Cup and the finals would be played in Pasadena's Rose Bowl.
East LA Walking Club's Mural Walk in early May had me thinking about the 50-year-old Goez Studio mural map along with two books -- Eric Avila's "Folklore of the Freeway" and the book "Murales Rebeldes!"
In honor of International Women's Day, here is Judy Baca's mural "Hitting the Wall" painted, whitewashed and then re-painted on the 101 Freeway: I photographed this framed version of Baca's mural at the MOLAA's Judy Baca: Memorias de Nuestra Tierra, a Retrospective which has been extended.
